What parents and students say

"Matthew's approach to teaching is very unique. He was able to apply a learning technique that would fit with each one of our personalities and learning styles. Matthew was able to reach into each one of us and help us learn in the way we knew how to respond. He is one a kind and his teaching methods should be offered in all schools. Everyone has a different way of learning and Matthew has figured out how to tap into that." -Tessie Balsamo

"He taught me how to learn again and what techniques were best suited to my learning style. He helped me to overcome to a degree, my fear of public speaking, by gently pushing me to do it, but also by building me up enough that I was able to push myself to do it. I came out of his class with a better understanding of myself and my strengths and weaknesses and how to find a way to balance those out."- Barb Brown

"Matthew is an excellent teacher who has a lot of passion and ambition in what he does. He strides to find better and more creative ways to help people learn the best way they can." -Nicole Boudreau

Operational Definitions

Learning Styles- A particular way in which the mind receives and processes information (Carter, Bishop, Kravits & Maurin, 2007).

Retention Rates – Retention rates refers to the specific amount of learning that an individual has acquired and has occurred within a specified amount of time.

Learning Profile - The development of an individual’s learning profile is based on a multiple intelligences assessment and a personality spectrum assessment. The profile is utilized as a tool for studying, reading, and retention. It caters specific learning strategies and matches those which are optimal for that individual and their specific learning style. Additionally, the profile will give the participant information on their strengths and challenges in an attempt to cater to their strengths, while building up their less dominant learning styles. The development of the learning profile will help students acknowledge their potential for learning as well as positively reinforcing the skills they currently have while acquiring more, resulting in a well rounded student, capable of receiving and processing multiple venues of instruction.

Learning Preferences - Personal abilities and areas of learning that interest you and come most easily to you (Carter, Bishop, Kravits & Maurin, 2007).

The purpose of learning strategies is to take the information that is received and then transfer it to a format in which the individual can process the material more efficiently and for longer periods of time. The strategies make connections between information taught to the individual learning style based on their individual learning profile. Learning strategies that are matched to the learning style have a higher degree of effectiveness for the individual and should be utilized in this manner for maximum retention.

Self-Efficacy - It is the degree that an individual feels competent and confident in any particular area of life.

Self-Esteem - It is the degree of evaluation on the emotional worth that an individual feels towards themselves.

Assistive Technology -Technology that is utilized by individuals to assist them in learning by helping them overcome a deficient in any particular area that would cause a disability that would impair learning on any level. There are many different types of technologies that can be employed to assist individuals and they also need to be matched to the individual learning style for maximum efficiency

Multiple Intelligences - Different ways in which intelligences are displayed in individuals and some are more developed then others. Howard Gardner is the theorist who created the multiple intelligences and the theory holds that there are eight different intelligences that everyone posses. Each individual has different degrees in which each of the eight intelligences are developed and nurtured. Here is a brief description of the eight multiple intelligences;

Bodily-Kinesthetic - Ability to use the physical body skillfully and to take in knowledge through bodily sensation (coordination, working with hands).

Musical-Rhythmic - Ability to comprehend and create meaningful sound and recognize patterns (music, sensitivity to sound and patterns).

Verbal-Linguistic - Ability to communicate through language (listening, reading, writing and speaking).

Visual-Spatial - Ability to understand spatial relationships and to perceive and create images (visual art, graphic design, charts, and maps).

Interpersonal - Ability to relate to others, noticing their moods, motivations, and feelings (Social activity, co-operative learning, and teamwork).

Naturalistic - Ability to understand features of the environment (interest in nature, environmental balance, ecosystem, stress relief brought by natural environments).

Intrapersonal - Ability to understand one’s own behaviour and feelings (self-awareness, independence, and time spent alone)

Differentiated Instruction - Instruction that encompasses utilizing all learning styles (visual, auditorial, kinesthetic, and read and write) and has the ability to offer instruction in a variety of formats to reach a wider range of students.
